Why the hell grow a garden??????

When I was a kid I watched my father grow a garden each summer. It would vary in size, sometimes small and sometimes huge but never the less he would have a garden. They were always tons of tomatoes, squash, peppers, zucchini and more. He would come home each day around 6:00pm, get changed into his shorts and V-neck t-shirt, grab a beer and head out to the garden. As a kid I would watch him tend to his garden like an overprotective mother. He would weed and water almost obsessively. To be honest, I had no idea what the appeal was. I would help most days but I hated getting bitten by the fire ants that made residence in his garden each year. My dad seemed to be immune to them but they were obsessed with stinging my toes. I would head to school the next day and almost die from the ant bites on my toes hidden under my nike's, the need to scratch the sting was almost unbearable. Now that I'm older I look back on all the thing my folks taught me. I had no idea that dodging fire ants all those years would help me down the road. Now that I have begun my own garden I have started to recall all memories from my childhood past and use them in my own garden (including dodging the damn fire ants). This blog will chronicle the up's and down's of a beginners garden. I hope you will join me for the journey.
